The 24 Hours of Spa

Three solid stints from Thomas Erdos contributed towards an impressive showing for RML in last weekend’s 24 Hours endurance race at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. The team brought together all four of its regular FIA GT drivers into one car to create a powerful driver line-up for the gruelling event – considered by some to be even tougher than the more famous Le Mans 24 Hours because of the challenging nature of the circuit. Erdos proved well up to the task, setting some of the fastest laps of the race as he powered through to a high of third overall.

Unfortunately, despite heroic efforts from everyone in the squad, the Saleen encountered a succession of minor woes as the race reached the eleven-hour mark before finally succumbing to a gearbox. For some while, however, a genuine podium opportunity looked to be on the cards. The build-up to the race had started very promising indeed, with Erdos second fastest in the first official practice session on Thursday morning. His time of 2:18.994 for the seven-kilometer circuit was less than a second away from Fabrizio Gollin in the #2 BMS Scuderia Italia Ferrari 550. “ It was a pleasant surprise to be second quickest, after missing the test day,” commented Erdos. “There was a new section to the track as well, through the Bus Stop, and while that didn't take very long to learn, it obviously gave some of the others a slight edge.”
