Daytona Race Report 2006 cont...

It was equally humbling to meet Eddie, not only for what he represents in international motorsport, but also to have the opportunity to work under his leadership as a team owner. He and his crew, led by Iain Watt and Garrett Mothersead, made us all feel very welcome. There was a great atmosphere in the team and I really enjoyed the calm yet focused environment. It’s a great way to go racing!

This was the second time that Mike Newton, Warren Hughes and myself have driven together in a 24-hour race. The first time, of-course, was last year at Le Mans when we won the LMP2 class. When I switched from single-seater racing to sportscars some 10 years ago, I often struggled with the idea of “sharing” a racing car. My view then – not that it has changed a great deal – was to set the car on a par with women and a toothbrush . . . not something you should share . . . but I could not ask for a better crew to share a race car with. As far as endurance racing goes, I know they will always bring it back to me in as good a state as I left it; and so they did that . . . in a very difficult race with nearly 80 cars sharing a very tight 3.5mile circuit. Hats off to you guys…. well done!!

The focus now shifts to the Le Mans Series. I can’t wait to start the programme with the RML guys, starting with a shakedown of the new MG-Lola EX264 AER, hopefully around the beginning of March. But for now, a big thankyou to the AD-Group and Dedicated Micros for their fantastic support throughout another great event at Daytona.
