It was equally humbling to meet Eddie, not only for what he represents in international motorsport, but also to have the opportunity to work under his leadership as a team owner. He and his crew, led by Iain Watt and Garrett Mothersead, made us all feel very welcome. There was a great atmosphere in the team and I really enjoyed the calm yet focused environment. It’s a great way to go racing!
This was the second time that Mike Newton, Warren Hughes and myself have driven together in a 24-hour race. The first time, of-course, was last year at Le Mans when we won the LMP2 class. When I switched from single-seater racing to sportscars some 10 years ago, I often struggled with the idea of “sharing” a racing car. My view then – not that it has changed a great deal – was to set the car on a par with women and a toothbrush . . . not something you should share . . . but I could not ask for a better crew to share a race car with. As far as endurance racing goes, I know they will always bring it back to me in as good a state as I left it; and so they did that . . . in a very difficult race with nearly 80 cars sharing a very tight 3.5mile circuit. Hats off to you guys…. well done!!
The focus now shifts to the Le Mans Series. I can’t wait to start the programme with the RML guys, starting with a shakedown of the new MG-Lola EX264 AER, hopefully around the beginning of March. But for now, a big thankyou to the AD-Group and Dedicated Micros for their fantastic support throughout another great event at Daytona. |
